Sri Chaitanya’s Teachings

Posted on September 27, 2026September 27, 2026 By Muralidhar Das

The teachings of Sri Krishna Chaitanya do not belong to any other school of thought. They should not be associated with Middle Eastern monotheism, fascism, socialism, liberalism, conservatism, counterculture, nationalism, or any other ideology that may arise and then disappear within the mortal world. The teachings of Sri Chaitanya-dev should be seen for what they are, standing apart from every kind of worldly belief system, like the sun in the sky.

Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya-Lila Chapter 17 Text 185

dharma-sthapan-hetu sadhur byabahar

puri-gosanir ye acharan, sei dharma-sar

The conduct of a sadhu is meant for teaching dharma. Whatever conduct was shown by Madhava Puri Goswami — that is purest dharma.

Anubhashya – the Commentary of Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami

১৮৫। সাধু বা মহাজন, মহদ্যক্তিকে মহাজন: বলে। পারমার্থিক ও জাগতিক বিচারে “মহৎ-সন্বন্ধে বিভিন্ন ধারণা বর্তমান। বদ্ধজীবের মনোধর্ম্ম বা ইন্দ্রিয়জ-জ্ঞানের ধারণায় যাহারা তাহার ইন্দ্রিয়ভোগ্য এবং ইন্দ্রিয়তর্পণের ইন্ধন-প্রদানকারী, নিকট “উত্তমর্ণ’ মহাজন হইতে পারেন, ভোগপর কম্মীর নিকট “জৈমিন্যাদি-খষি” বা বিভিন্ন মতপোষক ধরন্মশাস্ত্রকারগণ চিত্তনিরোধাভিলাধষিগণের নিকট “পতঞ্জল্যাদি ঝষি’ ; শুক্কজ্ঞানপন্থিগণের নিকট নিরীশ্বর কপিল, বশিশ্ঠ, দু্র্বাসা বা দত্তাত্রেয় প্রভৃতি কেবলাদ্বৈতবাদিগণ ;

185. A sadhu, or mahajan, is someone who possesses genuine greatness. Yet there are many different conceptions of what constitutes “greatness,” both from spiritual and from worldly points of view. According to the mental tendencies of the conditioned jiva, or according to knowledge derived through the material senses, anyone who provides objects for sense enjoyment or who fuels the gratification of the senses may be regarded as a revered mahajan.

To the fruitive worker attached to material enjoyment, Jaimini and other rishis, or the authors of the various schools of dharma-shastra, may be considered mahajans. To those who aspire to restrain the mind, Patanjali and the other yoga-rishis may be regarded as mahajans. To the followers of the path of dry intellectual knowledge, the atheist Kapila, Vasistha, Durvasa, Dattatreya, and other proponents of kevaladvaita may likewise be accepted as mahajans.

To those dominated by the modes of rajas and tamas, Hiranyaksha, Hiranyakashipu, Ravana, his son Meghanada, Jarasandha, and other kings — whose brute strength made them proud and whose determination in opposing Vishnu was unsurpassed — as well as Ekalavya, Karna, and others renowned for their devotion to their gurus, may be regarded as mahajans.

To men proud of their attachment to women, Daksha and the other Prajapatis, who adored women, may be considered mahajans. To worldly people, those who seek, or who devote themselves to the removal of bodily and mental disease, grief, suffering, fear, or material want, may likewise be accepted as mahajans.

To the jivas bewildered by material nature, philosophers, scientists, historians, men of letters, poets, eloquent speakers, social leaders, and political leaders who have no relationship with Vishnu may also be regarded as mahajans. To those who deceive themselves, greedy men who claim spiritual authority or the position of guru merely on the strength of a hereditary bloodline — believing that bhagavad-bhakti, the soul’s supreme spiritual function, is confined within a brahmin’s semen and blood — may be accepted as mahajans. Likewise, those who oppose genuine saints such as Sri Haridasa Thakura, while merely imitating externally his transcendental practice of hari-bhajana; tricksters and masters of deception; demons such as Putana, Trinavarta, Vatsa, Baka, Agha, Dhenuka, Kaliya, and Pralamba; or enemies of Vishnu such as Paundraka, Srigala Vasudeva, Sukra the preceptor of the demons, the atheist Charvaka, Vena, Sugata, Arhat, and others; and those who deny the historical reality or supreme divinity of Sri Gaura-Krishna — all these may be imagined as mahajans by foolish, deceived, and unfortunate people. Some supposed mahajans proclaim themselves incarnations of God; others, using attractive words that appeal to the Vishnu-opposed mentality of the deluded masses, induce them to proclaim or establish their supposed divinity.

Consequently, to those devoid of bhagavad-bhakti, people driven by material desires, karmis, dry jnanis, yogis without devotion, and men greedy for wealth and for those types of women who agree to be purchased for a price, and for worldly prestige, may indeed be regarded as mahajans. Yet the non-envious Srimad Bhagavatam, which establishes the supreme truth free from all deception and reveals the ultimate reality, declares (SB 7.13.25):

“Generally, so-called mahajans do not know this truth, for their intelligence has been bewildered by Maya. Their minds, captivated by the sweet, flowery words of the three Vedas, remain absorbed in the elaborate ritualistic ceremonies of Vedic sacrifices.”

In other words, those fruitive workers in this world who are renowned as “mahajans” do not understand the glory of bhagavad-bhakti. Their intelligence has been bewildered by Vaishnavi Maya, composed of the three modes of material nature. Consequently, disregarding the transcendental bhagavad-bhakti of Vaikuntha, they remain engaged in the ever-expanding ritualistic activities centred on the worship of material nature, and thus remain bound within the net of Maya.

The intelligence of so-called mahajans has been dulled by the apparently charming, sweet, and eulogistic statements of the Rig, Sama, and Yajur Vedas. Although these personalities may be imagined “mahajans” in the understanding of worldly people, they do not possess an intelligence that is fixed in the service of Purushottama Sri Bhagavan. Srimad Bhagavatam declares (SB 3.23.56):

“One whose activities are not meant for dharma, whose practice of dharma does not lead to detachment, and whose detachment does not culminate in rendering service at the feet of the Lord — even though seemngly alive, are dead.”

The hero engaged in bold action who does not perform work for the sake of dharma, the hero of religion who does not practice dharma for the sake of detachment, and the hero of renunciation who does not renounce worldly enjoyment for the pleasure of Sri Vishnu — all of these are numbered among the “living dead.”

In truth, only that which satisfies Sri Hari is called seva. Any work, religious practice, or renunciation that does not bring pleasure to Sri Krishna — even though it may be promoted in this world under such names as service to one’s hereditary lineage, service to the caste-based society, non-divine varnashrama system, service to the sick, service to the poor, service to the destitute, service to the wealthy, service to women, or service to various gods of material existence, and may be praised as a “great virtue” or as a “deed worthy of daily remembrance” — all these are, in reality, nothing more than sense gratification, or material enjoyment.

Such is the misfortune of the world! To the materially conditioned jiva, those who provide the fuel for sense gratification — those speakers, preachers, and applauded leaders who encourage the masses to engage in seeking satisfaction of their senses — are celebrated as “mahajans.” The people do not understand or recognize the true mahajans, for their intelligence is corrupted by the four defects beginning with illusion.

From beginningless time, those who identify the self with the bag of seven bodily constituents — blood, flesh, semen, and the rest — and who have developed a taste for bodily identification, have, like a herd of animals blindly following its leader, floated along in the current of knowledge generated from the material senses. Disregarding the words of the true mahajans, they continually accumulate offences at the feet of the mahajans, branding them with names such as “narrow-minded,” and thus bringing misfortune upon themselves. Others, following their own ideas rooted in desires for sense gratification, invent imaginary mahajans and become engrossed in countless sinful activities, such as adultery, debauchery, the pursuit of profit, the desire for honour and prestige, hypocrisy, and violence toward living beings.

In truth, unless one has correctly identified the genuine mahajan, none of the jiva’s endeavors can bear fruitful results. Concerning the true nature of the mahajan, Sri Chaitanya-charitamrita (Madhya-lila 25.54–57) states:

“No one accepts Ishwara as the Supreme Cause. Each establishes his own doctrine by refuting the opinions of others. Therefore, we cannot know the truth from the six systems of philosophy. Whatever the mahajan teaches, that alone we accept as the truth. The words of Sri Krishna Chaitanya are a stream of nectar. Whatever reality He reveals — that alone is the real essence of truth.”

In Srimad Bhagavatam (6.3.19–21), the names of twelve mahajans are given. In the age of Kali, the four acharyas of the pure Vaishnava sampradayas who preach devotion to Bhagavan are also mahajans. Within our own sampradaya, Sri Swarupa Damodara, the lord of the Gaudiyas, is the original mahajan. Sri Rupa and Sri Sanatana — the dearmost associates of Sri Gaurasundara, the Supreme Truth in a form non-different from Swarupa Damodara — as well as all the saintly followers of Sri Rupa, are likewise mahajans. Sridhara Swami, the proponent of Shuddhadvaita and follower of Sri Vishnuswami, is also a mahajan. Chandidasa, Vidyapati, and Jayadeva are all mahajans.

But those unfortunate persons who approach these mahajans with an enjoying mentality — that is, who, instead of serving them, attempt to use them as instruments for fulfilling their insignificant selfish desires, or who aspire to become “a guru over the guru” — remain far removed from all these mahajans. For such types of people, sense gratification, or servitude to Maya, appears before them in the form of an imaginary mahajan. Deceived by this illusion, their senses become diverted and covered, preventing them from following the true path. Ultimately, the endeavours of pure devotees of Bhagavan cannot be understood by their material intelligence.
